STONE EASEMENT

Closed in 2006, the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) secured a conservation easement with the Stone Family that permanently protects over 180 acres of farmland, forests, wetlands and meadows on Dry Hill in the Town of Watertown in Jefferson County. The easement secures scenic vistas from Dry Hill Road (Cty. Rt. 155) that afford views over Watertown to Lake Ontario and Canada. It is the first easement project completed by THTLT in Jefferson County.

The Stone Family recognized the importance of protecting open space for future generations, and made this very personal decision to limit the development on their land. The conservation easement covers three parcels and will limit subdivision and development potential to one additional residence per parcel. It also provides for the continuation of agricultural and forestry activities. The property has been in the Stone Family since 1912. The original homestead included the adjacent limestone house that was constructed in 1821 by the Locee Family.
